Angels Wings ATC

Hi all, Erin here. Art can be therapy, and this is what these ATCs are all about for me.  Not only for a friend who has had a loss, but also to still help me heal from the loss of my daughter.  This is why I craft everyday, to help heal.

These little cards are made with wings stamps from Paper Wings Productions, not only as a background for each card but also cut out on the embellishments. 

On the backs of each of the cards is the poem that was read at my daughter funeral, a very common poem meant for parents at the loss of a child.

Here is my full video tutorial, but I will warn you, I get a bit emotional on this one.  This whole process brought back so many emotions even after almost 8 years.  I will always miss my little Kristen, and moments like these really bring my feelings right back to the day she got her wings.

Mixed Media Monday - ATC Cards

Hello Again friends!  This is Carmen from Serendipity Studio and I'm back visiting at The Aviary to share with you a quick tutorial for ATC cards.  I love working on these little guys because you can pack so much creativity into a small space.  ATC cards are 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and often used to trade with other artists.  It's a great way to share your style with other artists and collect them.

For these cards I will using the wonderful September Nesting Components Mixed Media Kit.  There are so many goodies in this kit that the only thing I had to supply was some paint and some gel medium.

I applied some scrapbook paper to a cardboard ATC card I had cut from a larger piece.  I love this film strip clip art that's in the kit.  It has a vintage and almost steam punk theme.

I love these letter stickers from Tim Holtz Idea-ology.  They look like marquee letters on this card.  I did seal them down with gel medium to secure them.

Here is the set I created today.  The cats only card has a beret and bow tie for the clip art cat that I painted with some metallic paint and added some Interference paint from DecoArt's Media Line for some more shimmer.  My favorite is probably the Queen Bee card.  The crown has gold metallic paint and white Signo Uniball pen.

Themed Thursday - Wings

Hello Crafters!

Zoey's here again for another post as Guest Designer!

It seems I totally felt in love with the amazing For the Birds Nesting Components Mixed Media Kit that I can't stop using it! For this project I will use some products from the For the Birds Nesting Components Mixed Media Kit , Lindy's Sidekick - Prairie Wildflowers (Hibiscus Rose), Stamper's Big Brush Pen - Nougat and Bird Beauty Unmounted Stamp Sheet.

For my project I created one ATC and one TAG, I used the same exactly elements / materials and also the same stamps set.

First step was to cover my ATC with some scrap paper, I glued it down using gel medium, covered it with a bit of gesso mixed with water and then I used the Lindy's Flat Fabio to color over the collage

Then I added my stamping using Stamper's Big Brush Pen - Nougat as ink. Both the stamps I have used are from the fab set Bird Beauty Unmounted Stamp Sheet

Then I added some light modeling paste through the stencil from the For the Birds Nesting Components Mixed Media Kit - I also added some color around the stenciled image using Inktense pencils. 

For my final touches I simply added washi tape and the sentiment

I repeated the same exact step on my tag. I just moved few things around and changed the bird -- I also had more space so I could fit the sentiment straight. It was very interesting for me to try and repeat the same technique / process on different thing. It gave me more ideas and even more inspiration. So I really challange you to do something like this aswell! Create something and then try to repeat more or less the same thing on a different support. You will notice how fun it is!

What's Up Wednesday - Clear Tar Gel ATC

Hi Paper Wings fans! Dana here today sharing an artist trading card that I created using Clear Tar Gel, the fun medium included in the Well Dressed Nesting Components Mixed Media Kit. I have limited experience with Clear Tar Gel, so I tried several different techniques with the gel to help familiarize myself with the product, which I'm sharing today in addition to my finished project.

I cut small pieces of scrap foam board to test several techniques. I gathered some simple tools; a spatula, plastic spoon, paper piercer and rub-on stylus, and acrylic paint.

I spread a layer of gel onto each board using a plastic spatula. This gel is very slow to dry, so I spread the gel over all three boards at the same time and didn't have to rush through my experimenting. The wet gel is opaque but dries completely clear.

For my first technique, I dotted small amounts of blue and purple acrylic paint onto the surface of a gel covered board. 

I then used a plastic spoon and a light spreading motion to mix the paint into the gel.

I let the gel dry overnight. This effect is super cool!

Next, I applied acrylic paint to a gel covered board just like above, but instead of using a plastic spoon to swirl the paint, I used a paper piercer to connect the drops of paint together.

I pulled the paper piercer through the dots of paint in a side-to-side motion.

I then pulled a rub-on stylus up and down the board to blend the paint, which created broader lines of color.

This is what the board looks like after drying overnight.

Lastly, I mixed Iced Enamels directly into the gel. I could have mixed paint, glitter, beads or fibers into the gel for this technique.

I used a plastic spatula to drip the gel onto the board.

This is a great way to add some shimmer to projects without the risk of having any of the product flake off. The Iced Enamels are completely sealed in the gel.

I had some leftover gel with Iced Enamels mixed in from the previous step and simply spread the extra gel onto a blank artist trading card using a plastic spatula. I applied the gel in an even layer and left the card to dry overnight.

I added this piece of chipboard from a past Nesting Components Mixed Media Kit to the card. I filled in the cloud with a piece of burlap that I brushed with white acrylic paint. I filled the raindrops with Clear Tar Gel, added a small drop of blue acrylic paint to each drop, and then used a paper piercer to swirl the paint through the gel. The red bird is from the For The Birds Nesting Components Mixed Media Kit. I used the Under The Weather Cling Stamp Set for the sentiment.
