Mixed Media Monday: Mermaid
Happy Monday peeps,
Today, I have a cute little mixed media piece for you using the mermaid from the Mermaid set as the focal image. Liz Balderas of handmade by Lissie girl drew all of the adorable stamps found in the Mermaid set and the Mermaid is a real treat to play with. I simply stamped her on a piece of white cardstock with Memento ink, cut her out and colored her in with Distress markers and colored in with a water brush. Just a word of warning Memento ink does bleed/separates a bit with water so if that bothers you will want to use a waterproof ink like Archival Ink by Ranger...I happen to like that the ink has a softened look. I added some stickles to the mermaid's tail for a little needed shimmer. I edged my mermaid in black marker to cover any messy cutting and give her a finished look. The mermaid is adhered to the background using dimensional tape so she pops off the rest of the piece.
The background...oh how I love those circles from the Backgrounds set by Rag & Bone Studio! I stamped the background times with VersaMark ink and then embossed it in white on a piece of book paper adhered to watercolor paper. I then sprayed the back with mists and over sprayed it all with some shimmer spray to produce a night sky.
See the waves? You can stamp the wave image over and over in a continuous line as shown below which is great when using it on a scrapbook layout or larger canvas. I stamped the wave onto patterned paper and colored it in with a Distress Marker spreading some of the color with my water brush before cutting it out. When I adhered the two lines of waves to the background I only put a strip of adhesive on the bottom and curled up the top to give them more dimension. To ensure they stayed down I also stapled them on the left and right hand edges using Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher.
On a piece of book paper I stamped the sentiment from Sea Melange and then tore it out before edging it with a Distress Marker.
For even more impact I added star sequins with mini brads to the background. Lastly I added some white photo corners.
This mini piece (measuring approximately 4.5 inches by 5 inches) could be kept as is or added to a journal, handmade book, card, layout, canvas or anything else you can imagine.
What would you make with the mermaid? Made anything with her we would love to see! Share a picture on our flickr group, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter (@PaperWingsProd) or comment here with a link.
By the way, did you see Julie's video? If not, you really should.
Take flight,
Shay.
