Themed Thursday: Vintage Technology

Hello there peeps!  It's Shay here.  For today's Themed Thursday I was inspired by our recent Vintage Design Team Blog Hop.  A little side tracking here: I strenuously suggest checking out this month's Blog Hop if you have not already for awesome projects and to welcome our new design team members, Cathi and Irit.  Don't forget to also check out Irit's deco-riffic project in her very first post here on The Aviary and Dana's glorious tutorial and altered box. 

As a departure from my own blog hop project, I wanted to do a more colorful spin on vintage. 

I pulled out my well loved Vintage Technology stamp set and some other stamp sets like Flourish Fun 1, Day Framer, Life Framer and Tabs & Banners, some journaling cards, lots of patterned paper and a few other items. 

Card No. 1

The focal point of the card is a journal card I stamped the typewriter from Vintage Technology upon in black ink and colored in with Copics.  The sheet of paper also from Vintage Technology I stamped in black ink and wrote in the "hello" and attached to the typewriter.  I added a few haphazard layers of paper, another journaling card and punched cardstock.  I made sure to adhere the larger pieces only in the center.  I sewed the layers together following the banner shape of the journaling card.  I made sure to curl up the edges and distress the edges of the journaling card.  The photo corner is actually a corner of the Life Framer frame stamped onto patterned paper and trimmed.

I added bits of doily and glitter tape.  I adhered these layers to a white cardstock base that I stamped with Flourish Fun 1 in grey ink and sprinkled some drops of yellow mist.  Last I added some matte gold sequins.

Card No. 2

The focal point of the card is a journal card I stamped the telephone from Vintage Technology onto in black ink and then added a teal paper pieced telephone without the telephone wire onto the telephone stamped directly upon the journaling card.  I stamped the double ended banner on orange patterned paper and cut off one end.  On the banner I stamped "take note" from Day Framer.  I adhered the banner with the Tiny Attacher.  I added a few haphazard layers of paper.  I made sure to adhere the larger pieces only in the center.  I sewed the layers together.  I made sure to curl up the edges and distress the edges of the journaling card.  The photo corner is actually a corner of the Life Framer frame stamped onto patterned paper and trimmed.

I added bits of doily, washi and glitter tape.  I adhered these layers to a white cardstock base that I stamped with Flourish Fun 1 in grey ink and sprinkled some drops of green mist.  Last I added some matte gold sequins.

Card No. 3 (the 1970's card according to my sister)

The focal point of the card is a journal card I stamped the cassette tape from Vintage Technology upon in black ink and colored in with Copics and a little highlights using a Uniball white pen.  The "best day ever" is from the Day Framer and happily fits perfectly on the cassette.  I added a few haphazard layers of paper.  I made sure to adhere the larger pieces only in the center.  I sewed the layers together.  I made sure to curl up the edges and distress the edges of the journaling card.  The photo corner is actually a corner of the Life Framer frame stamped onto patterned paper and trimmed.

I added bits of doily and glitter tape.  I adhered these layers to a white cardstock base that I stamped with Flourish Fun 1 in grey ink and sprinkled some drops of orange mist.  Last I added some matte gold sequins.

You can use any sort of scraps of patterned paper or paper pads to change up the look of these sort of cards like I have done here.  If you are anything like me you have so much lovely patterned paper that this would be a great way to use it and be bold with your choices of pattern and color.  Also fun would be to just decorate journaling cards for scrapbooking and/or Project Life without making them into cards.

Feature Friday- Advent Calendar: Part 2

Hello Peeps! 

Welcome back to Part 2 of the Advent Calendar!  Today I"m sharing tag 9-16.  Since I used smaller tags for this project, I felt the smaller numbers from the Perfect Alphabet Clear set would be a better choice, and keep the focus on the image. The number 9 is from the Perfect Number Clear Set and all were stamped with Versa Fine Black Onyx.  Let's take a look at them!!



 I've been inspired by so many ideas on Pinterest, Splitcoast, and Online Card Classes Holiday Workshop.  Here are today's tags!

Details:  This tag features one of our Christmas Sentiments stamps in the background, and one of our border stamps from our Life Framer set. I inked cardstock in yellow, red and green, and then embossed the border stamp in a contrasting color and cut the strips to length for the tree shape.  The star is from our Hanging Stars set, and it is also embossed (Egyptian Gold-Judikens)

Details: Cardstock background (Basic Grey), white Neenah Cardstock with a torn edge added for snow and snowman from Snowman Love set and used the cute little scarf for this little guy.  The Let it Snow was stamped to fit the space and embossed with Stampin' Up Whisper White ep.  Since he was looking upward, I had to give him a little snowflake to watch from the Winter Mix It Up set.  And of course, I couldn't resist a little Rock Candy Distress Stickles to make the snow sparkle.

Details:  I'm a Texas gal!  So, I had to pay a little tribute to Texas!  I used the Lone Star State clear stamp and stamped it on this cute Christmas plaid paper and cut it out. I added the cute Texmas sentiment in Festive Berries distress ink. And finally, a sweet little mistletoe from the Holiday Tags clear set. The woodgrain paper is from Studio Calico.  Perfect!!

Details:  I just love this pine bough and pine cones from the Pines Cling Stamp Set. I added another element from the Holiday Tags clear set to create an ornament.  I drew the hanger and bow with a gold pen.  And, I love this sentiment from the Winter Mix It Up set.

Details:  Basic Grey green paper from Figgy is accented here with Flourish Fun 2 stamp and two more strips of BG Figgy paper.  All edges are inked with Walnut Distress ink, and the Happy Holiday Script sentiment added and embossed in red! Simple and Elegant.

 Details: Here is another stamp from the Pines Cling Stamp Set using the large tree and I used a white pen to add snow to the tree and Frosted Lace stickles.  Although it is faint here, I used the small dot stamp from the Art Textures set to create falling snow stamped with SU! Whisper White craft ink and embossed with clear ep.  It reminds me of a trip I took to Wyoming for my first Christmas in snow.  I'll never forget that.

Details:  This one took a little work, but I love how it turned out.  The tag background is inked with two colors of Distress ink plus a little Walnut.  I've added a strip of paper to separate the two areas and give it some interest.  Then I used the Merry Clear stamp with Christmas in black, and merry stamped in Festive Berries on a separate brown inked tag.  I embossed merry ink clear to give it a little shine, and then trimmed the sentiment to expose the background and have the letters hang off the side. The finishing touch is the holly berries and leaves from Holiday Tags stamped and colored with Distress markers, with a touch of Barn Door distress stickles. It feels classic and delicate.

 Details:  I loved seeing this technique from Jennifer McGuire in the Online Card Classes Holiday Workshop.  First I stamped the sentiment from Snowman Love  and using a mask, I have sectioned off part of the tag and stamped a flourish and several snowflakes in a variety of blues along the edge.  Using an ink blending tool, I shaded the exposed areas of the tag.  And, to add that icy look, a touch of Diamond Stickles.  I love how this one turned out! (Flourish Fun 2 , Holiday Mix It Up, and Winter Mix It Up for the snowflakes).

Feature Friday: Falling for Fall

Happy, happy Friday peeps!

It's Shay here and I am delighted to bring you some cards for the autumn season.  I am so happy that the weather is downright pleasant after the heat of summer and I am anticipating all this season brings including autumn crafting.

I made two cards that are very similar, but by changing up the colors, sentiments and some of the images they have their own character.

Using the same stamp set, Scallop Border, I made the background for two cards with a different look by using different patterned paper.  All of the border stamps (Double Dot, Lace, Leaf, Lines, Scallop, Single Dot, Triangle and Zig Zag) come with two stamps: an outline and solid that work together or can be used separately.  Another fun feature of the border stamps are that they can be lined up so you are able to stamp the entire length of a 6" x 6", 8" x 8" 8.5" x 11", 12" x 12" page or even larger surfaces.

For these cards I simply stamped the scallop outline many times on patterned paper and cut them out and adhered them together (one under the other for a tiered effect) into a panel.  I cut the left and right sides for straight edges. I then adhered all the scallops to a piece of cardstock with the bottom cut into a scallop design.  For the Halloween card I also stamped an equal amount of scallops with the solid scallop in black ink and adhered them alternately.

For interest and dimension I curled up the edges of the scallops.

The sentiments are framed by the frame image in Day Framer for the fall card and the frame image in Life Framer for the Halloween card.  I added dots or circles to both frames using Copic markers.  You can also use patterned paper, paint them in, doodle in designs to decorate your frames...really the possibilities are as varied as the colors in the sky.

Funky Alphabet is perfect for sentiments during autumn (especially Halloween) and I spelled out "boo" and "fall" using them.  The "Happy" is from the fall card is from Details Framer and "to" from the Halloween card is from Snapshot Framer and "you" from the Halloween card is from Day Framer.  The cute cat is from the Window stamp set.

You could use the idea of this tiered scallop background for scrapbook layouts, tags, gift bags, mixed media projects among a few things.  Try one of the other borders for a completely different look.  Embellish with punched images, jewels, leaves, feathers, flowers, ribbons, fabric, lace, pearls, sequins, die cuts and the like to really make it your own.

What's Up Wednesday - Techie Birthday!

 

 

 

 

Hey Peeps!

 

 

Just dropping in for a quick share of a quick birthday card.  My friend Steven's birthday was yesterday.  I always find myself wondering what I'm going to do for a guy card.  With my dad and husband, there are many things to pick from, but I tried something completely different for this one.  Steven happens to work in IT.  Check out this Birthday Card for him.

 

 

 

 

I wanted to cheer Steven up, so I picked sentiments from several sets and stamped the stars over and over, embossing everything in white.  Having all of the elements being stamped and embossed with the same color really does help to make a quick card.

 

I can imagine that some of you are wondering "what is this background"?  Did any of you figure it out???  Well, when I got my computer about a year ago, I was peeling off the plastic covering that fits around......

 

 

 

 

 

...the keys of the keyboard!!!!  I knew that one day it would come in handy as the perfect stencil, and it really did. I used Mister Huey's Opaque White spray with the keyboard stencil to give a subtle image of the keyboard.  And much like the keys "backspace", "enter", and "shift", I chose to put the words on the keys to create the birthday sentiment.  It's true what they say, inspiration can come from ANYWHERE! I hope this project inspires you to try something new and unexpected.

Feature Friday: Framing a Scene

Happy Friday peeps!

Summer may be waning, but the fun here at The Aviary sure is not.  Have you seen Norma G.'s beautiful mixed media notebook tutorial Monday or Julie's pretty card Wednesday with great ideas on how to make multiples of one card?

Today, I thought I would challenge myself by building several scenes using our Framer (Day Framer, Details Framer, Life Framer and Snapshot Framer--I chose to use the Life Framer and Snapshot Framer) and Window sets.

After you stamp out your frame on cardstock there are several ways to build the scene within a frame:

1. Masking.  You can create a mask of your frame using a masking product or a piece of computer paper with repositionable tape. 
2. Cut Out Scene.  You would stamp your scene inside your frame not worrying about stamping over the frame and simply cut out the inside of the frame and place it on another (clean) stamped image of your frame.
3. Cover Frame.  Similar to the previous option, you would stamp your scene inside your frame not worrying about stamping over frame and the cover the outside frame with another (clean) stamped and cut out image of your frame.

Whichever way you prefer, make several scenes using stamps like London, Paris, Royal Melange, Luc, Louise, Marcel and Sophie.

Now you can add your scenes to all sorts of things.  Place them on a stamped tag:

Stamps used: Window; London and Writing Backgrounds on scene; Double Dot Border and London on background.

1. Stamp scene, color in with Copic markers and cut out inner rectangle.  Adhere inner rectangle to another window image stamped upon patterned paper.  Cut out.

2. Stamp solid Double Dot Border in blue to cover a tag.  Stamp outline Double Dot Border over a few of the solid Double Dot Border in black.

3. Paint a block of gesso where framed scene will be placed.  Outline with dash marks made with black pen.  Adhere framed scene to tag.  Stamp sentiment three times.


Create a simple card (or card set):

Stamps used: Life Framer; Paris, Sophie and Text Melange on scene/heart; Lace Border on card base

1. Stamp scene and color in with Copic markers.  Stamp and cut out frame from patterned paper.  Adhere patterned paper frame over scene and cut out.

2. Stamp heart and color in with Copic markers.  In grey ink stamp Text Melange over heart.  Stamp sentiment from Sophie.  Cut out and add to frame.

3.  Stamp solid Lace Border in blue on card base.  Stamp over solid Lace Border with outline Lace Border in black.

4. Adhere frame to card base.


Find a way to use some scraps by adding your framed scene as a focal image:

Stamps used: Snapshot Framer; Royal Melange and Text Melange on scene; Hanging Stars and Marcel on Snapshot Framer; Backgrounds on background

1. Mask outer frame.  Stamp scene and color in with Copic markers (I did a little masking of the king on this one). Remove mask.  Stamp sentiment from Marcel.  Stamp star from Hanging Stars with yellow and orange inks.

2.  I found two pieces of scraps (or leftovers) to create an interesting background that I adhered onto the card base.  The dark blue embossed background comes from my Mermaid project).  The other was a piece of patterned paper that I had punched a lot of stars for my Once Upon a Time project--for this I merely cut a strip from that.

3. Adhere framed scene to card with dimensional adhesive.

Flight Plan: Mission 003

Hello peeps!

It's Julie here with a new Flight Plan!  Are you ready for Mission 003?   It's June and I don't know about you, but things always seem to get busy in June - weddings, showers, Father's day, family summer gatherings - and I usually make more cards and projects this time of year than any other.  I can't wait to see your projects, and I am especially excited about the samples you will make when the new stamps are released!!!  The Paper Wings gals really love looking at your projects, but we want to see more.  How about inviting a friend to join you in this challenge?  That would be a fun weekend project!   Here is our sample for Mission 003.

What is a Flight Plan?

It is a guide of sorts to get your project started by giving you some guidelines to follow, but in our case, we hope your creativity will interpret these plans into amazing and clever new creations. We’d love to see your finished pieces, so we have set up a Flickr gallery where you can share your submissions with us. So, put on those paper wings and get ready to take flight!

Your Mission:

Create a project (card, ATC, tag, scrapbook layout, multi-media piece, etc.) using paper wings productions stamps with the Flight Plan as your guide.

• Share a picture of your project on our Flickr group. Make sure to tag it using this code: FP003. If your picture is not tagged we will not know it has been entered into the challenge.
• You have until  Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. central time to post your entries.

Shay's card

To begin with I wanted to try a card using the Flight Plan.  I decided to go with a love theme using the love birds from Home Tweet Home framed by the frame image from the Life Framer set.  The line of hearts was created using the heart from Frothy Concoctions (I so wanted to use that heart that I based the whole card around it).  Lastly I embossed the word love from Banner in gold using Tsukineko's Versamark ink.


Julie's Card

 

I chose to be very literal with the Flight Plan this time (but as you know from our other samples, you certainly don't have to). The coffee border stamp from Play With Your Coffee works nicely for the rectangle portion of the FP, and I grabbed the Happy Birthday sentiment from Let's Eat Cake.  I wanted to use my new Aquamarkers on this card, so I stamped it on watercolor paper with Memento ink from Tsukineko because once it is dry, it is waterproof - perfect for watercoloring.  I love this polka dot and found all of these pattern papers in my scrap pile.  This card came together in a flash!

Paper Wings Gals

Color Combo Part II

Happy Friday peeps,

I know I am meeting this Friday with a great deal of relief.  How about you?  Are you too looking forward to the different pace of the weekend?  Planning on doing some stamping?

Today I have the second part of the yellow, aqua and coral color combo.  In this post are slightly larger projects than the cards from Wednesday.

Julie's project:

Julie made this timely (I could not resist that cheesy pun) art journal page using Flight Plan Mission 002 as a design guide.  Julie first painted the pages with white paint and then she used watercolor crayons to create the gradient yellow and coral background.  I love how she used Tim Holtz's tissue tape for the strips from the Flight Plan and that you can also see the color behind them.  The frame was cut out using her Silhouette and she colored it in with a Distress Marker (barn door)--even though the color is a red I think it could read as a very deep, rich coral.  Don't feel that the colors must match the color combo exactly...like the Flight Plan they are meant as a guide.  Some reds and pinks will be reminiscent of coral for instance. 

I am particularly taken with the punched circles that she stamped with various borders from Day Framer, Detail Framer, Life Framer and Snapshot Framer.  The days of the week are from Snapshot Framer and the date are from the Life Framer. 

How did she create those circles with perfectly coordinated colors of the stamped image and its background? Julie stamped each circle with one of the borders using Distress Inks in the following colors: tumbled glass, broken china, barn door, scattered straw.  To color in the backgrounds she took the ink pad and pressed it into her craft sheet.  She then sprayed or spritzed the ink she transferred onto her craft sheet with water (use a little water spray bottle) and used a paint brush to paint lighter shades of the color she stamped with onto the circles. 

To add some aqua (or in this instance teal) to the bottom left hand portion of her page she placed a piece of patterned paper under the gold (yellow) and red (coral) chipboard letters.

To future compliment her theme of time she stamped the clock from Melange Women 2 (I think) down the left hand side of the page.

Shay's project:

I decided to try my hand again at scrapbooking.  I haven't done a 12x12 spread in ages, but with a color combo and using the Flight Plan Mission 002 I thought I would give it a try.   The main point of this layout is the journaling because the pictures although really cool are a mystery.  Another thing that helped me to tackle something I was pretty unfamiliar with was a scrapbook kit from Studio Calico (Glee Club from September 2011 which had the right colors and elements I really liked).  I think it is always important to realize that you need not do it all.  There are all sorts of ways to help you to create like sketches (like our Flight Plans), color challenges (like our color combo) and/or ready made kits.  I also added a sticker sheet from October Afternoon which were in the right colors to pile of supplies to use along with some cream Mister Huey's (reads as a pale yellow color) which I used in the upper left hand side and lower right hand side.

In my scrapbook layout I think of stamping as the foundation.  I created lines of triangles that remind me of arrows using the large pennant from Happy Day to act as the strips from Flight Plan Mission 002, but also for movement and to direct the eye to the pictures.  I colored in a few odd triangles with an aqua colored marker.  I didn't realize until later that the triangles mimic the diamond pattern of the window in the right hand picture.  Happy accidents which no one but you has to know was unintentional...tell people you meant to do it!  I added the flourishes from Flourish Fun 1 under the upper left hand corner and lower right hand corner of the photo block for some interest and more of an organic feel after so many more angular elements.  All of my journaling was written on journal lines created from one of the border stamps from Day Framer...this border is perfect for journaling lines as you can stamp it over and over to make the line as long as you need it.

You probably noticed that my yellows, aquas and corals on this layout are a bit dusty or aged which is perfect for the older pictures whereas Julie's colors are more saturated and brighter reflecting a happy feeling.  You can always use variations on the colors to reflect your story or project.

Flight Plan: Mission 002

It's Julie again!  I can't believe it is already May, can you? April went by so fast.  The Paper Wings gals really enjoyed looking at the submissions for April and can't wait to see what this month's Flight Plan will inspire you to create. Are you ready?  Here we go...

We’d love to see your finished pieces, so we have set up a Flickr gallery where you can share your submissions with us. So, put on those paper wings and get ready to take flight!

Create a project (card, ATC, tag, scrapbook layout, multi-media piece, etc.) using paper wings productions stamps with the Flight Plan as your guide.

Julie's Sample:  This time I chose to use a literal translation of the Flight Plan. The Snapshot Framer and Let's Eat Cake sets made quick work of this clean and simple birthday card.  I like this style, and with a few color changes, would be a perfect card for the birthday guy in your life.

Shay's Sample: My interpretation is pretty literal too as an art journal page.  I decided to use three framed ladies to created the large block and used pattern paper strips behind the framed ladies for journaling.  I was able to use a few stamp sets...one was a leftover scrap from my first canvas.  Waste not, want not!  Stamp sets used: Melange Women (this one I use a lot), Geishas, Melange 4 -Architecture (I used the fairie panel and the tip of the pointed building on the left and right hand edges--fun find), Flourish Fun 2 (as background on the little tag) and Life Framer (the frame image, but also the numbers and year on the little tag).
